Making the Decision
-
Deciding when it’s time to say goodbye is deeply personal and never easy.
-
There is no “right” or “wrong” choice—only a loving one.
-
Your pet’s final moments are precious. Choosing at-home pet euthanasia gives you the privacy and peace to say goodbye in a familiar, comfortable environment.
Our Philosophy of Care
-
The word euthanasia comes from Greek, meaning “good death.”
-
Dr. Johnson believes every pet deserves to pass gently, without fear or pain, in the comfort of home. She considers it an honor and privilege to guide families through this compassionate process with empathy and respect.
What to Expect During Your At-Home Appointment
Understanding the process can bring peace of mind.

Step 1: Gentle Introduction
-
Dr. Johnson will quietly introduce herself to you and your pet and allow time for everyone to settle.
Step 2: Sedation for Comfort
-
A sedative injection (or sometimes oral medication first) is administered to relieve pain and anxiety. Your pet will fall into a deep, peaceful sleep.
-
You may choose any space in your home or yard where your pet feels most relaxed.

Step 3: Final Medication Administration
-
Once your pet is resting comfortably, a powerful anesthetic is given that gently and painlessly stops brain and heart function.
-
Most pets pass away quickly and peacefully, though it may take up to 10+ minutes depending on individual circumstances.
-
Dr. Johnson will confirm your pet has passed away by listening to their heart.

Frequently Asked Questions about At-Home Pet Euthanasia
Can my children be present?
Dr. Johnson invites anyone who wishes to be with their pet during their final journey. Children, in particular, often appreciate the opportunity to say goodbye and share a quiet, meaningful moment with their beloved companion.
Can my other dog(s) or other pets be present?
Dr. Johnson welcomes your pet’s animal companions to be present during the visit. Before deciding, consider whether having other pets nearby might make it harder for you to focus fully on the pet you are saying goodbye to. It’s common for other animals to shift their attention to Dr. Johnson as a new person in the home, which can sometimes feel distracting. In many cases, families find it most peaceful to allow other pets to spend time with their companion after they have passed, while Dr. Johnson steps outside to give you privacy.
Will my pet feel anything?
Dr. Johnson is committed to helping your pet feel as safe, relaxed, and comfortable as possible by tailoring her approach to their individual needs. For small dogs and cats, she will often begin with a strong oral sedative before administering any injections, allowing them to become heavily sedated before administering any injectable medications. For the sedative injection, she uses the smallest needle available and dilutes the medication to minimize any discomfort. Most pets experience this injection as no more uncomfortable than a routine vaccination.
