Burying a Cherished Pet at Home

Compassionate guidance for families choosing to lay their beloved pet to rest at home.

For some families, home burial feels like the most meaningful way to say goodbye — keeping their pet close in a place filled with memories.

In Maryland and Delaware, it is generally legal to bury your pet on private residential property that you own, provided the burial does not create a health risk or nuisance. Because local regulations may vary by county, municipality, or homeowners association, we recommend confirming guidelines before proceeding.

Important Considerations for Safe and Respectful Burial

Choosing home burial carries responsibility for protecting other animals, wildlife, and the environment. The following information is provided to help you make a safe and informed decision.

Euthanasia Medication Safety

The medication used during euthanasia (pentobarbital) remains in your pet’s tissues for an extended period of time.

If remains are disturbed or improperly buried, this medication can pose a serious, even fatal, risk to wildlife, other pets, and potentially contaminate soil or water sources.

Proper burial depth and placement are essential.

Grave Depth & Placement

  • Bury your pet with at least three feet of soil coverage.

  • Avoid rocky areas that prevent adequate depth.

  • Do not bury near large trees to prevent root disturbance.

This depth helps protect from wildlife, weather exposure, and odor.

Avoid Flood-Prone Sensitive Areas

For environmental protection:

  • Do not bury in low-lying or flood-prone areas.

  • Keep gravesites at least 100 feet from wetlands, wells, shorelines, or surface water.

This helps prevent contamination of water sources.

Check for Underground Utilities

Before digging, contact your local utilities office to ensure there are no buried lines beneath your chosen site.

Wrapping & Biodegradable Materials

Avoid plastic or synthetic materials, which slow decomposition.

Instead, consider wrapping your pet in:

  • A cotton blanket

  • A favorite t-shirt

  • A wool sweater

You may also sprinkle agricultural or hydrated lime over the remains to assist with odor control and natural decomposition.
